Delhi experienced its second ever queer (odd or unusual) pride march on 28th June 09 from Barakhambha Road to Jantar Mantar around 6.00 P.M. Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgenders & intersexed people participated in this march in great numbers. Along with them a lot of sympathizers participated in this march. A big number of onlookers gathered on both sides of the road to view the uniqueness of this march. The participants were strongly in favour of dropping down article 377 of IPC mainly which describes these sections of people as criminals. They were also demanding the equality of the treatment in this modern society. Moreover the Home Minister Mr. P.Chidambaram & Law Minister Veerappa Moily are in favour of repealing this section of the act which had boosted up the confidence among these section of the people. A lot of sentimental placards were also displayed during the tenure of the march. This march ended at Jantar Mantar with the lighting of the candles.

  1. The gay or homosexual/lesbian problem in India, unlike other parts of world, is knitted with socio-religious concerns. While gays are considered to be blessed with extra ordinary power and their presence is supposed to be very auspicious in the marriages and child birth etc. On the contrary, the same people are often denied their livelihood in the corporate sectors due to intolerance in the Indian society. It is not that the section 377 of Indian penal code bars their existence and revoking it will solve the impasse. It is much more deep rooted than it seems to be. The age old Indian mind set requires a massive transformation--an upheaval task. In this regard, the photo artist, Indraneel Sen's (Queer Pride March) effort is admirable. His photographs are very appealing and speak of themselves for the mass rallying for a cause. I liked the placard saying-“Homo,Hetero bhai-bhai”. Pankaj Sharma deserves a lot of thanks for giving space to such a live problem in his blog. It is a serious photo-journalism. Anup Mishra (Bareilly, India)mishraanup@rediffmail.com
